From the Van Winkle Collection
Pappy Van Winkle became involved in the industry early on. He was a traveling salesman for W. L. Weller and Sons Distillery in Frankfort Kentucky. You’ll see the Weller name again later in this article. On Derby day 1935, after Pappy and a coworker merged Steller with a local Bourbon distiller, the first Van Winkle Bourbon was released.
Four generations of Van Winkles have been and continue to head production of the Van Winkle brand. Pappy continued to be actively involved until his passing in 1965 at the age of 91. His name and innovations live on in this highly anticipated annual collection of fine Bourbons.
Bourbon, as you may be aware, has only 3 ingredients, water grain, and yeast. No color, flavor, or additives are permitted in the production of Bourbon. Pappy’s was part of the switch from rye and corn to wheat with corn. The result, as you will taste, was a softer, smoother Whiskey.
